Joe Tasker
Joe Tasker is Senior Vice President for Government Affairs and General Counsel of the Information Technology Association of America. He is responsible for the Association's government affairs efforts, which extend to the United States Congress and Administration, as well as to Europe and the rest of the world. A published author, he is a recognized leader in the field of electronic commerce policy law and regulation and international trade in information.
Before coming to ITAA, he led the Government Affairs Office of Compaq Computer Corporation in Washington, where he served as Associate General Counsel and Vice President for Worldwide Government Affairs for close to ten years. He served as a member of ISAC-5, the electronics industry sector advisory council to United States trade negotiators, and was chairman of the Coalition for an Information Technology Agreement, advocating elimination of customs tariffs on high tech trade. Prior to joining Compaq, Joe was a partner in a law firm in Washington, DC, where he practiced international trade, antitrust and intellectual property law. He started his legal career in 1975 as a merger trial attorney at the Federal Trade Commission's Bureau of Competition and as a member of the Competition Bureau Director's policy staff.
Joe is a graduate of the George Washington University National Law Center (J.D. 1975, Order of the Coif) and the University of Oklahoma. In addition to serving as chairman of a variety of industry-wide coalitions involving technology and trade policy, he has lectured at the Kennedy School of Government (international trade in information), the International Law Institute (the WTO and electronic commerce), and the US Foreign and Commercial Service (international aspects of intellectual property law; a refresher for USFCS officer training). He is a member of the District of Columbia Bar, as well as the United States District Court for the District of Columbia; United States Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit; the United States Court of International Trade; and the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
The Information Technology Association of America (ITAA) provides global public policy, business networking, and national leadership to promote the continued rapid growth of the IT industry. ITAA consists of over 400 corporate members throughout the U.S., and a global network of 53 countries' IT associations. The Association plays the leading role in issues of IT industry concern including information security, taxes and finance policy, digital intellectual property protection, telecommunications competition, workforce and education, immigration, online privacy and consumer protection, government IT procurement, human resources and e-commerce policy. ITAA members range from the smallest IT start-ups to industry leaders in the Internet, software, IT services, ASP, digital content, systems integration, telecommunications, and enterprise solution fields.
