Larry Plumb

Executive Director - Emerging Issues & Technology Policy
Verizon

Plumb is responsible for anticipating emerging trends, assessing their impact on Verizon's plans and reputation, and developing appropriate actions and positions on the range of high-tech industry issues. He is part of a team that develops relationships with hi-tech industry members, interactive technology associations, research institutes, think tanks and academics, and which participates in public-policy dialogue through blogs, public speaking and direct discussion.

Larry also is Verizon's representative to the Gridwise Alliance, the Digital Energy Solutions Campaign (DESC) and the American Council on Renewable Energy (ACORE), where his focus is to educate and promote policies that leverage the energy-efficiency potential of broadband and information technology.

Prior to assuming his current position in Jan. 2006, Larry was Corporate Director-Industry Analyst Relations for Verizon in 2004-05. He established the company's first corporate-wide program to work systematically with market and industry researchers.

Larry came to Verizon via Bell Atlantic, a regional Bell company that merged with GTE in June 2000. Plumb has held numerous positions in media relations and market communications for Bell Atlantic and Verizon since the late 1980s, at a time when the communications industry has confronted new competition and new opportunities enabled by the advance of digital and optical technologies. Over his career Plumb has generally served as a spokesperson and an evangelist for the transformation of these firms from their legacy mission of telephone company to that of a broadband communications company that connects people to the people, information and entertainment that's important to them. His titles have included: Director-Corporate Media Relations; Director-Newsroom Operations; and Chief Communications Officer for Bell Atlantic Video Services and Bell Atlantic Internet Solutions.

Plumb joined Bell Atlantic in 1984 from Monsanto Company, where he managed an issues identification program that helped that company anticipate and adjust to the impact of secular forces. Prior to Monsanto, Larry worked with the news media and taught at Webster University and St. Louis Community College.

Plumb earned his Ph.D. in Political Philosophy from Purdue University. He and his wife live in Vienna, Virginia. Their two children are in college.
