The Internet Caucus Advisory Committee (ICAC) kicked off its 2001 program of educational events with a Reception and Technology Fair on February 14, 2001 in the Hart Senate Office Building. Hosted in conjunction with the Internet Caucus Co-Chairs, the educational event featured over 30 hands-on demonstrations of the latest Internet technologies that deal with online music, wireless networking, digital signatures and biometric authentication, Internet privacy, handheld computing, e-education, e-government, disabilities access, and more.
Over 700 attendees reviewed the demonstrations and mingled with their peers. Attendees included Members of Congress, Hill staff, representatives from the FTC, FCC, Department of Commerce, and the White House. In addition, the Internet and high-tech industry and non-profit community were well represented.
The program included remarks from FCC Chairman Michael Powell, comments from Jerry Berman, Chair of the ICAC, Senators Conrad Burns and Patrick Leahy and Representatives Bob Goodlatte and Rick Boucher.
Jerry Berman laid out the program of events for year 2001. The ICAC will host a series of educational events and will continue with its high-level Speakers Series. The schedule of planned events is available.
Technology Tutorial Launched
The event also featured the launch of the ICAC Technology Tutorial for Members and staff new to the Internet. The Tutorial, an animated CD-ROM, is designed to assist Internet Caucus Advisory Committee members in educating Members and staff about the uniqueness of the Internet, how it works, why it's important and why Members of Congress should care. The CD-ROM can be run on any computer with a CD-ROM drive and is ideal for private briefings in Congressional offices.
