Congressional Internet Caucus Advisory Committee Announces Tech Fair & Policy Primer Devoted to Exploring RFID Technologies

Demonstrations and Panel Discussion to Focus on Varied RFID Applications

What: The Internet Caucus Advisory Committee, in conjunction with the Congressional Internet Caucus and its Co-Chairs, will host a technology exhibition and policy primer to explore the policy challenges and implications of RFID technology applications. Radio frequency identification (RFID) is a technology that uses small tags affixed to physical items, such as consumer products, equipment, luggage, prescription medicines and even pets and hospital patients, to wirelessly identify and track the object, or detail its history. The RFID Technology Exhibition & Policy Primer, to be held Wednesday, March 9, will illustrate the gamut of the emerging marketplace incorporating applications from a variety of fields, including: retail, pharmaceutical, transportation, financial, inventory management, distribution, security, and agriculture. The policy primer portion will feature a balanced panel of experts speakers who will introduce policymakers to the associated policy considerations, including privacy, security, health, and spectrum.

Who: Policy primer panelists, with expert insight, will discuss the full range of RFID applications and deployment. Panelists include: Paula Bruening, Staff Counsel, Center for Democracy & Technology; Dan Caprio, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Technology Policy and Chief Privacy Officer, DoC; Alan Estevez, Assistant Deputy Undersecretary for Supply Chain Integration, DoD; Sandra Hughes, Global Privacy Executive, Procter & Gamble and Co-Chair, EPCglobal Public Policy Working Group; and Elliot Maxwell (moderator), author, consultant, & academic. The Policy Primer portion will commence with member comments from Senator Conrad Burns, Chairman, Commerce Subcommittee on Communications, and will conclude with remarks from Senator Patrick Leahy, Ranking Member, Senate Judiciary Committee. The technology exhibition portion will feature over 50 demonstrations of RFID applications that are already being deployed in the largest private enterprises and federal agencies, as well as in smaller-scale operations, such as libraries and inventory-intensive small businesses.
